J. Douglas Thompson was born in Vancouver, British Columbia. At a young
age he moved with his family to the eastern slopes of the Rockies, near
Calgary, Alberta where he lived until he was a young teenager. During those formative years, he spent many hours wandering through the foothills of the Rockies, the Badlands and the plains just to the east. It was during those years that he became keenly aware of the variety of textures and colours of the northern natural beauty that was all about him. The high prairie skies and the dramatic storms made a particularly strong visual impact on him. His college years were spent in the Toronto area studying commercial art. He then studied and graduated from a four year advertising design course in the U.S.A. He has worked as a commercial artist for twenty five plus years and presently owns and operates an advertising firm, preparing materials for national accounts. Doug has traveled in over fifty five countries, and has worked abroad in Europe and in South America. He spent three years in London England and six years in Quito, Ecuador working in international media. During that time he traveled into the Amazon rain forest, the Monteverde rain forest in Costa Rica, and the Galapagos Islands. He has hiked the high ranges of the Andes where he observed first hand the rugged textures of the vast peaks of the Andes along with the constant weather phenomena only found in the high country the world over. Previously in Europe, he also hiked and climbed in the Alps and the Pyranees mountains and Norway. These adventures have heightened his awareness of the vast diversity found in the natural world. He has shown his paintings at the National Museum of Ecuador and has done commission work for members of the government of Ecuador. He presently has work in a number of galleries in Canada and has regular group and one man shows. His work is found in corporate and private collections. Doug paints in acrylic and watercolour. |
